The following report describes a computer based learning environment that teaches computational estimation, CENTS (Computational Estimation Notation-based Teaching System). It has been designed to investigate issues in the use of multiple representations to support learning in primary mathematics. This report will concentrate on three areas. Firstly it will explore issues in computational estimation describing both the conceptual and strategic knowledge thought to be necessary for performing estimation. The second describes current approaches to the use of multiple representations to support learning. The final section summarises how the design of the system has been informed by these theoretical perspectives and will describe its implementation.
