Research is presented which suggests that employing multiple representations within a computer based learning environment can improve primary school children's understanding of estimation. We investigated how the properties of three different representational systems (mathematical, pictorial and mixed mathematical and pictorial) influenced learning outcomes. Children in all experimental groups significantly improved at performing estimation. However, children's insight into the accuracy of their estimates only improved in the mathematical and pictorial conditions. Computer records are examined in order to explain these results.
