AVOW diagrams constitute a novel representational system for electricity. The representation uses simple diagrammatic constraints to encode the laws of electricity, including Ohm's law, the power law and Kirchhoff's laws. AVOW diagrams integrate under a unifying conceptual scheme the different levels of abstraction and the alternative perpectives that are needed for a good understanding of electricity. Examples are given to show the validity, completeness and scope of the representation for modelling electrical circuits. A summary is given of the results of an empirical study of learning with AVOW diagrams that has demonstrated the effectiveness of the representation for instruction and learning.
