An overview

My students’ research, funded through Research Council and commercial sponsors, has ranged from the development of literacy to mobile educational games.

My current research students are looking at:

  1. Educational applications of mobile augmented reality (Afdallyna Harun)

  2. Collaborative storytelling technologies (Giulia Gelmini-Hornsby)

  3. Impact of communication media on detection of deception (Pat Brundell)

If you are thinking of applying to do a PhD with me, I would be interested in discussing a range of possible ideas and projects.  Please contact me to check out your plans before applying formally to the University.

If you are interested in doing a PhD, you may be eligible for a Research-Council funded studentship and, in addition, the School of Psychology offers around ten studentships per year and the Learning Sciences Research Institute often has studentships available on a competitive basis.

There are also exciting opportunities for students from a wide range of backgrounds including computer science, engineering, business, geography, psychology, HCI and other arts, science and social science disciplines, to pioneer interdisciplinary research in Ubiquitous Computing for the Digital Economy through the new Horizon Doctoral Training Centre.

Here is a link to one of my students in the Horizon DTC, Afdallyna Harun, who is currently exploring how symbolisms in icons can carry 'cognitive clues' enabling information and knowledge sense-making.
